'If It's Football, It's Vital'

26 years on from the first meeting with OUFC

It was November 8, 1986 and in the old First Division (Now Premiership) Manchester United took on Oxford United, in front of a crowd of just 13,545 at the Manor ground. Why am I mentioning this game well a certain Alex Ferguson was taking charge of his first match in charge of the red devils.

Sir Alex took over from former Oxford United captain Ron Atkinson with the club in 21st position in the table:

Manchester United team: Chris Turner, Mike Duxbury, Arthur Albiston, Kevin Moran, Paul McGrath, Graeme Hogg, Clayton Blackmore, Remi Moses, Frank Stapleton, Peter Davenport, Peter Barnes.

Oxford United: team: Tony Parks, David Langan, Neil Slatter, Les Phillips, Gary Briggs, Malcolm Shotton, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge, David Leworthy, John Trewick, Kevin Brock.

Maurice Evans was the man leading the U's at the time and he oversaw a 2-0 win for the U's with goals from Neil Slatter and John Aldridge.

Just 26 years later and who would have thought the now great Sir Alex Ferguson would be announcing his retirement. It will be over 1,500 matches in charge of the the devils when he departs football management to become a director of Manchester United.

His total silverware haul is 49 trophies:
